Nelson Mandela

Shortly after his release from prison in 1990 Nelson Mandela attended a concert in his honour at Wembley Stadium.

The ovation he receives as he walked on stage lasts for fully six minutes, and the impromptu singing of 'You'll never walk alone' makes the hairs stand up on the back of the neck.

Except for the dignitaries and celebrities in attendance it is a young audience, and 23 years later, their children are growing up in a world where there is much hatred and division, but one where there is also plenty that brings young people together, including a love of music and the playing of sport.

This statement from Mandela remains an inspiration for all of us working to combat all forms of discrimination:

No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.
