Action Week activities by FURD

Black History Month and One Game, One Community Weeks of Action have now finished.

However, two exhibitions on loan from FURD can still be seen at the Workstation, Paternoster Row, Sheffield, until Monday 14th November. The Arthur Wharton exhibition and the Pioneers, Past Masters and Future Challenges display are on show alongside Black Britannia, an exhibition of photographs by John Ferguson highlighting the diversity and the achievements of the black community in Britain. Entry to the exhibitions is free and they are open to the public from Mon–Friday 8.45am–8pm, and 9am–3pm on weekends. The exhibitions were officially opened by Sheffield's Lord Mayor, with attendees including BBC Look North and Arthur Wharton's grand-daughter Sheila Leeson.

On Tuesday 25th October, Sheffield United held their designated 'One Game, One Community' action week match against MK Dons at Bramall Lane. Members of FURD's under-12 girls team, Nubian Girls, acted as flag bearers, carrying the 'One Game, One Community' banners around the pitch. Staff and volunteers from FURD gave out hundreds of special Sheffield United-FURD team posters, anti-racist stickers and magazines to fans before the match. The poster can be downloaded from the link below or hard copies can be requested from FURD while stocks last.

On Wednesday 26th October, FURD staff and young people from the Urban Mixtures group ran a 5-a-side football tournament at the Goals centre. The tournament attracted 12 teams from across Sheffield and had the dual purposes of promoting the Anti-Racist Weeks of Action and publicising the forthcoming U-Mix centre.
