FURD coach steers Sheffield Kickz team to victory

Sharrow Kickz Programme is running football sessions twice a week, all year round and is aimed at young people aged 13 – 18. The programme is designed to give the young people in Sharrow something positive to do with their time as opposed to hanging around on street corners. The older participants will also have the opportunity to get involved as a volunteer with Kickz and be able to access many different courses and workshops to help increase their chances of becoming employed.

Kickz is not only about football, we are very flexible and open to any suggestions so whether you’re a footballer or dancer come down and see what we have to offer. Current Kickz sessions are as follows, but do check as they are subject to change:

Tuesday night football – Under 16’s: 4:30 onwards at Mount Pleasant Park pitch

-  Under 19’s: 6:30 – 8pm at Mount Pleasant Park grass area

Thursday night boxing club – 12+: 5:30 onwards at Burkeys ABC Sharrow Boxing Club, the old Sharrow Junior School.

Friday night football – Open age: 4:30 onwards at Mount Pleasant Park pitch

On Sunday 29th June 2008 Sheffield United Kickz Programme took a team of local teenagers and volunteers to Manchester United’s prestigious Carrington training ground to represent Sheffield United Sharrow Kickz Programme in the Kickz Club Tournament 2008. Also attending were teams from Aston Villa, Birmingham city, Blackburn Rovers, Derby County, Everton, Liverpool, Man City, Man United, Middlesbrough, Newcastle United, West Brom and Wigan Athletic.

The tournament was split in to 2 leagues, we were drawn in a league with Man city, Blackburn, Wigan and West Brom. After losing the first game to Man City 4 – 1, heads were down, but the lads pulled themselves together and won all their remaining league games to earn themselves a semi final clash with tournament favourites Man United. By this point the lads had built up a huge following of supporters with 90% of people there cheering the underdogs on. After conceding a sloppy goal in the opening minutes of the game, the lads got their heads up and played them off the park and with goals from Jarvis Salmon and Mursal Mohammed they took the lead, only to lose the lead again in the dying seconds. The game went to extra time with Sheffield again dominating possession but could not find that winning strike, it remained 2 – 2 and went to penalties. With penalties also going down to the wire it took a brilliant save from goalkeeper Ismael Willis in sudden death to book a spot in the final for Sheffield. Unfortunately Sheffield lost out in the final to Man City, the only team to beat them through the whole day. As well as receiving awards for their achievements from ex Man United and Ireland International Dennis Irwin, Mursal Mohammed was presented with a pair of custom made Nike football boots for being crowned the Nike player of the tournament. The whole day was a huge success for everyone, and is only the beginning for the Sheffield United KICKZ Programme.
