Football Unites Racism Divides works with v, the youth volunteering charity, to get young people positively involved in their communities. The v project began in 2007 and replaces the Millennium Volunteers scheme which Football Unites ran from 1999 until 2008.
From 2007-8 we provided over 200 short taster sessions and a full time placement for a volunteer who worked on marketing and publicity. We aim to work with nearly 800 young people aged 16-25 between 2008 and 2011. Full-time, part-time and short-term taster sessions are all available. The type of activities available include:
- Providing sporting activities for the community through the utilisation of our Streetkick mobile sports arena
- Working with young offenders in prison to deliver a combined package of both sport and education
- Providing a mentoring scheme for refugees to help them settle into the community
- Delivering arts and dance workshops to young people
- Working to bring different communities together through FURD’s conflict resolution programme
- Delivering healthy lifestyle workshops to black and minority ethnic communities
- Undertaking advocacy and campaign work
- Helping with promotion and publicity
Through the delivery of these volunteering opportunities, FURD aims to help achieve communities that are cohesive, with active citizens displaying community pride with good health and well being.
Football Unites Racism Divides Educational Trust is one of 152 projects across the country being funded by v as part of vinvolved, a new national youth volunteering programme backed by £75 million funding, which aims to inspire half a million more young people to volunteer in England.
FURD Co-ordinator Howard Holmes said:
“We are very excited to be part of the vinvolved programme. The funding will enable us to harness the enthusiasm and talents of young people in Sheffield for the benefit of the community".
