Community Day set for Sunday 25 April

Football Unites, Racism Divides, along with Sheffield United FC, hold their fifth joint Community Day on Sunday 25th April at the Bramall Lane ground. Activities will include five mini-tournaments on the pitch, involving over 300 young players, Football Unites’ new inflatable Streetkick game, bouncy castle, children’s entertainer, stalls and displays, henna painting, hair braiding, DJs, performances by local young people and food from around the world. The day will end with an 11-a-side match between Sharrow United and the African Dream Team for the Community Cup.

Football Unites has had an exciting twelve months since the last Community Day, including being singled out by UEFA as a model community education project and receiving a special award from Kick It Out for it’s contribution to the campaign. A team of seven are to tour Portugal for two weeks during Euro 2004, taking their Streetkick game to Porto, Guimares and Lisbon.

Closer to home, the partnership project with Sheffield Futures to build a new base for Football Unites, along with a state of the art all-weather floodlit training pitch at the former site of the Pomona Youth Club, is progressing well. It is hoped that this unique facility will be open by the autumn of 2005.

Admission to the Community Day is free, and all are welcome. Entrance is via the Cherry Street car park, and the activities start at 2.30, with the Community Cup match ending proceedings with a 5.30 kick-off.
