Anti-Racism Action Week; Dave Bassett

Thursday 17th October: Come down to Tudor Square in the middle of Sheffield and meet players and other representatives of local professional football clubs, as well as staff from FURD and Sheffield City Council, at the regional launch of the Europe-wide Anti-Racism Week of Action in Football. At 1pm a Brazilian-style 3-a-side ´Streetkick´ tournament will begin. At 1.30 the tournament will break, and club representatives will make speeches about how their clubs are tackling racism, and their activities for Action Week. At 2pm the tournament will resume and there´ll be an opportunity for autographs and interviews with players. The event will end at around 2.30 with a presentation of prizes for tournament winners and runners-up. Weather permitting, speeches will take place in a gazebo in the square but if the weather´s terrible we may take refuge in the Crucible foyer! Call FURD on 0114 2553156 for more information.

Monday 21st October: (This is not a FURD event, but may be of interest!) ‘Football! Football! Football!: As part of Sheffield’s annual ‘Off the Shelf’ festival of writing and reading, Dave Bassett will be in town talking about his new book ‘Settling the Score’. He is joined by football journalist Phil Andrews and writer Tom Palmer – author of the book ‘If You’re Proud to Be a Leeds Fan’. The event will take place at Ponds Forge from 7.30pm-9pm. Beforehand, from 6pm-7pm, there are two workshops for budding football writers – one on football journalism, and one about general football writing. For more details call 0114 2734400.
